Education & Early Career

Education:

• • B.Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maiduguri (1989)
  • M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan (1991)
  • Completed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar (1989–1990)

Early Profession:

Worked as a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri (1991–1993) before moving into the banking sector. He held roles at the Commercial Bank of Africa, African International Bank, and Zenith Bank (rising to branch manager in Maiduguri).

 Political Career & Public Service

Cabinet Positions: Entered government in 2007 when appointed as a Commissioner in Borno State under Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, serving across five ministries, including Finance and Economic Development, Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Education, Agriculture, and Health.

Governor of Borno State: Elected Governor in 2011 and re-elected in 2015, serving from May 29, 2011, to May 29, 2019. He also chaired the Northern Governors’ Forum during his second term.

 Nigerian Senate: Elected in 2019 to represent Borno Central Senatorial District, serving in the 9th National Assembly from June 11, 2019, to May 29, 2023.

 Vice Presidency: Selected as the vice-presidential running mate to Bola Ahmed Tinubu in July 2022, won the February 2023 presidential election, and was sworn into office on May 29, 2023.
